How To Wear a Wig For Beginners

Putting on a wig for the first time can feel a little awkward, right? It’s easy to feel like it’s just sitting on your head, not blending in with your own hair. As a beginner, the first time you put on a wig, it can feel quite unnatural and awkward.

You may struggle to make it look seamless and blended with your own hair. This is a common problem that many new wig-wearers face. However, with the right techniques, you can learn how to wear wigs correctly and achieve a natural, confident look.

Choose Your Wig Type

When you’re looking to buy a wig, you’ll find two main kinds: those made from fake hair (synthetic) and those made from real human hair. To choose the right one, think about what you want from your wig and the style you like. The biggest differences between these wigs are how much they cost, how comfortable they are to wear, and how much care they need.

  • Synthetic wigs are the cheapest option and are pretty low-maintenance because they come pre-styled. The downside is that you can’t use hot tools or hair products on them, so your styling choices are limited. They’re perfect for occasional use, but they usually only last about 3-6 months.
  • Human hair wigs are the most expensive, but they’re super versatile. You can color, cut, and style them with hot tools just like your own hair. They look the most natural, but they also need the most care and cleaning.

You might have heard of lace front wigs. These wigs, whether made from real or fake hair, have a thin, see-through lace base that makes the hairline look super natural. The best part is that you can style your part any way you want, unlike other wigs that have a fixed part.

Quick Tip: Before you buy, think about how you’ll wear the wig. For a fun costume party, a synthetic wig is perfect. If you want something for everyday wear that looks real, a human hair wig is the way to go.

Things to Prepare

  • Wig: Choose a wig that feels comfortable and looks great on you
  • Wig cap: This is a must-have! It creates a smooth base for your wig to sit on
  • Hair clips or pins: These are helpful for keeping your own hair out of the way.
  • Wig adhesive or double-sided wig tape (optional): These can help secure your wig and create a more natural-looking hairline.

How To Wear Wigs step by step

Don’t worry! With a few simple tips and tricks, you can learn how to wear wigs correctly and make them look completely natural.

  1. Pull your hair away from your face: Begin by using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently pull your natural hair back from your face and hairline. This will help create a smooth surface for the wig to sit on and prevent any bumps or uneven textures from showing through.
  2. Pin up long hair: If you have long hair, use hair clips or pins to neatly pin it up and out of the way, ensuring that your natural hair is flat against your head. This will help the wig sit more comfortably and look more natural on your head.
  3. Put on a wig cap: Carefully place the wig cap over your head, starting from the forehead and working back towards the nape of your neck. Make sure the cap covers all of your natural hair and creates a smooth, even surface.
  4. Secure the cap: Use small, soft-grip bobby pins or clips to secure the wig cap in place, making sure it doesn’t slip or move around. Start at the temples and work your way around the head, placing pins or clips every few inches to ensure a secure fit.
  5. Put on the wig: Gently place the wig on your head, starting at the front hairline and lowering it down towards the nape of your neck. Adjust the wig until it feels secure and comfortable, ensuring that the front hairline aligns with your natural hairline.
  6. Fix the wig with glue or tape: If you want to create an even more seamless, natural look, you can use a small amount of wig adhesive or double-sided wig tape to help secure the wig in place and blend the edges with your skin. Apply the adhesive or tape sparingly along the hairline, blending it out towards the edges of the wig to create a smooth, undetectable transition.

Common Problems When Wearing Wigs

In general, wearing a wig is quite simple, you just need to follow the basic steps above to be able to wear the wig properly. There will be some problems, but they usually happen to beginners and inexperienced people. Read on to fix problems if you encounter them.

  • Visible wig line or edge: This can happen if the wig isn’t properly secured or if the hairline doesn’t blend seamlessly with your skin. Ensure that the wig is placed correctly and use adhesive or tape to help blend the edges.
  • Slipping or shifting of the wig: If the wig feels loose or moves around on your head, make sure the wig cap is securely in place and consider using additional adhesive or tape to keep the wig firmly in position.
  • Uncomfortable or itchy feeling: This could be due to the wig cap or the wig itself not fitting properly. Try adjusting the wig or using a different wig cap material to see if it helps with the discomfort.
  • Difficulty blending the wig with your natural hair: If the wig doesn’t blend seamlessly with your own hair, try using a small amount of wig adhesive or hairspray along the hairline to help it melt into your natural hair.
